Puddle Ducks do NOT need their own boat.Students in this fleet receive an introduction to sailing, the yacht club environment, and learning respect for the water in a fun and relaxed program. Students will NOT be sailing in their own boats until they reach age 8 (Greenie fleet)

River Rookies do NOT need their own boat. Students in this fleet receive an introduction to sailing, the yacht club environment, and learning respect for the water in a fun and relaxed program. Students will NOT be sailing in their own boats until they reach age 8 (Greenie fleet).

River Rookies can enroll in and repeat Puddle Ducks if they so choose, as a way to extend length/exposure to the junior sailing program.

River Rookies runs July 27 to August 14, 2026 (3 weeks)

The Green fleet will focus on an introduction to sailing. Sailors are required to have their own boat (Optimist). The emphasis is on fundamentals, developing confidence around sailboats, understanding safety on the water and basic seamanship. Sailors are encouraged to enter their 1st regatta – No Tears regatta hosted by TRYC early/mid August.

IHYC has a limited number of Optimist boats available to rent for our first-year sailors. Boats are available on a first come first serve basis via online registration

Opti Awesome Fleet is for those sailors that have progressed from the Green Fleet. This fleet will emphasize participation rather than race results. Fun activities and basic drills be will be incorporated into the class in order to foster a true love of sailing as an activity as well as a sport. Participation in regattas is encouraged, but optional.

Opti Race is designed for sailors who are interested in becoming a more competitive sailor. This fleet will focus on more advanced sailing skills with a focus on individual and team racing skills. The sailor must be committed and driven to be part of this fleet. Participation in all/most bay area regattas is strongly encouraged.

This fleet is intended for older, more experienced sailors. Advanced racing techniques and strategies will be focused on. Participation in all/most regattas is strongly encouraged.

These fleets are intended for older, more experienced sailors. Advanced racing techniques and strategies will be focused on as well as the concepts and techniques of double handed sailing for FEVA/420. Participation in all/most regattas is strongly encouraged.

Opti boat rentals are reserved for our Green fleet / first time sailors, on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Please note that each sailor must pay the rental fee (420 is a double handed boat)
